
Sri Lankan troops continuing their daily search and clear operations in the North and East have recovered hoards of LTTE arms and explosives from the area.
In the Kaddawana area of Trincomalee Air Force Troops conducting search operations recovered 15 kg of TNT explosives and two suicide jackets on Friday (19). Explosives charges, cords and hand grenades were also found in the stockpile.
Task Force VI troops conducting search operations in Mullaitivu of recovered 8 anti-personnel mines from Akkarayankulam area while Task Force 111 troops recovered 109 anti -personnel mine primers and 4 RPG rounds from Alankulam area yesterday.
Troops of 233 Brigade recovered a 120mm mortar during a search operation conducted in Angodavilluwa area in Batticaloa on Friday. Army troops conducting search operations in Vavuniya on Friday found 15 Claymore mines and suicide belt among other things from the Asikulam area while the 211 Brigade Troops recovered a stock of various explosives from the Mahavulgaskade area.
Fearing that the LTTE has buried stockpiles of weapons and explosives for future use, Sri Lankan Army has launched a massive operation to recover the weapons and explosives buried hidden by the LTTE in the thick jungles of the northern Wanni region.
The Army stresses that de-arming the area is a must prior to resettlement of the displaced civilians.
The Army has so far recovered 1.5 million landmines and there are millions more buried in the region, the Army believes.
