Sri Lankan soldiers commence operation to combat dengue


Following the successful victory over terrorism in the country, Sri Lanka Army personnel today embarked on another major offensive, this time against the dengue mosquitoes.

Nearly 150 soldiers this morning joined the government's dengue suppression program from Kuruwita area in Ratnapura district to support the health officials. This was the first time thet security personnel have joined this program.

More soldiers are expected to assist the health officials during future dengue prevention programs that are to be held island wide.

Spread of Dengue has become a major calamity in the country and the fast spreading epidemic during the last one and half years has already claimed over 135 lives within the first five and half months of this year.

According to the health officials more than 9,000 people are currently suffering from dengue.

The government has taken strict measures to control the epidemic. The public have been urged to take preventive measures and warned to take legal action against them if they failed to keep the environment free of mosquitoes. People who allow mosquitoes to breed by allowing stagnating water face penalties.
